AAAJL Live Roulette Variants: European, American, French and Speed Tables Worked Out in Pesos

Every live roulette table looks alike on a phone, but the number of zeros on the wheel quietly changes what each bet costs. AAAJL puts the popular variants side by side for first-time players and shows the arithmetic behind each one. Table names, limits and rules vary by operator and studio.

Pockets, Payouts and the Edge They Create

Roulette pays as if the zeros did not exist. A straight-up number pays 35 to 1, and red or black pays 1 to 1. The zero pockets are where the house edge comes from.

VariantPocketsZerosHouse edge (most bets)
European3702.70% (1 ÷ 37)
American380 and 005.26% (2 ÷ 38)
French with La Partage3701.35% on even-money bets; 2.70% on others
Speed or Auto (single-zero wheel)3702.70%, but many more spins per hour

Worked Example 1: ₱50 on Red, Three Wheels

Expected value is (chance of winning × amount won) minus (chance of losing × amount lost).

  • European: 18 red pockets out of 37. (18 × ₱50 − 19 × ₱50) ÷ 37 = −₱50 ÷ 37 = −₱1.35 per spin.
  • American: 18 red out of 38. (18 × ₱50 − 20 × ₱50) ÷ 38 = −₱100 ÷ 38 = −₱2.63 per spin.
  • French with La Partage: when zero lands, half the even-money bet comes back. (18 × ₱50 − 18 × ₱50 − 1 × ₱25) ÷ 37 = −₱0.68 per spin.

Same bet, same chip, yet the American wheel costs nearly four times as much per spin as the French rule on average. These are long-run expectations; any single spin simply wins ₱50 or loses ₱50 (or ₱25 on French zero).

Worked Example 2: A ₱10 Straight-Up Number

On a European wheel you win ₱350 with probability 1 in 37 and lose ₱10 with probability 36 in 37.

  • Expected value: (1 × ₱350 − 36 × ₱10) ÷ 37 = −₱10 ÷ 37 = −₱0.27.
  • As a share of the ₱10 stake, that is 2.70%, the same edge as red or black.
  • The difference is volatility: most spins lose, and occasional hits pay large.

Worked Example 3: Why Faster Tables Cost More Per Hour

The edge per spin stays the same on a speed wheel, but hourly cost is edge × stake × spins. Spin rates differ by studio, so the counts below are illustrative only.

TableIllustrative spins per hour₱50 even-money betExpected cost per hour
European, standard pace40−₱1.35 per spin₱54
Auto or speed, single zero80−₱1.35 per spin₱108
American, standard pace40−₱2.63 per spin₱105

A fast single-zero table can cost as much per hour as a slow double-zero one. For a first session, a standard-pace European or French table with a small stake stretches a budget furthest.

Worked Example 4: The Doubling System Up Close

Doubling after each loss looks safe until you add it up. Start at ₱20 on red: losses of ₱20, ₱40, ₱80, ₱160, ₱320, ₱640 and ₱1,280 total ₱2,540, and the eighth bet must be ₱2,560 just to finish ₱20 ahead.

Seven reds missed in a row on a European wheel has a probability of (19 ÷ 37)⁷, about 0.94%, or roughly once in every 106 sequences. It feels rare, yet it wipes out many small wins, and table maximums can block the next doubling. No betting system changes the edge.

Choosing Your First Table

  • Look for a single zero; skip the 00 wheel when a single-zero table is available.
  • Read the table's help screen for La Partage or En Prison rules and any multiplier payouts.
  • Check the minimum chip against your budget before sitting down.
  • Treat the results board as history, not a forecast.

Only adults 21 and older may sit at live tables run by licensed operators. Set a limit, play at a pace you can follow, and stop when it stops being fun.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which roulette variant has the lowest house edge?

French roulette with La Partage or En Prison, at 1.35% on even-money bets. European single-zero is 2.70% and American double-zero is 5.26%.

Do multiplier roulette tables pay better?

Not necessarily. Many reduce standard straight-up payouts to fund random multipliers, and their RTP varies by studio. Check the help screen at the table.

Is the wheel on live roulette real?

Yes. A physical wheel and ball are filmed in a studio, and results come from the spin shown on camera.

Does betting on many numbers lower the edge?

No. Every standard bet on a single-zero wheel carries the same 2.70% edge; covering more numbers only changes how often you win and how much.

What stake should a first-timer use?

The table minimum, or close to it. Smaller stakes reduce expected cost per hour and let you learn the betting window without pressure.
